The Black Star of Queensland
The Black Star of Queensland, a remarkable black star sapphire weighing 733 carats, holds a fascinating history. It was discovered in the 1930s by Roy Spencer, a young boy living in Queensland, Australia. Initially mistaken for a common rock, the gem served as a doorstop for nearly a decade before its true value was realized by the Kazanjian brothers, gem experts from Los Angeles. After meticulous cutting, the gem revealed a distinct six-rayed star, showcasing the phenomenon of asterism.
The Black Star of Queensland gained fame in the 1960s when it was exhibited at prestigious venues, including the Smithsonian Institution. Its popularity soared after being featured in a television sketch where Cher wore it. Currently set in a diamond-encrusted piece, the gem is owned privately and is valued at approximately $80 million
This stone is not only a testament to the natural beauty of star sapphires but also a symbol of Australia's rich gemstone history. Its story reflects the allure of discovering a hidden treasure and the artistry involved in unveiling its true splendor.
